Seasonal Challenges in the Restoration Industry: Preparing for Winter Storms and Spring Floods
November 01, 2024
Appliances in our homes make daily life and chores much more convenient. While we are very grateful for the modern technology that has brought us washing machines and dishwashers, these appliances don't come without their faults. Since water is needed for these appliances to function and do their jobs correctly, they can become common sources of water damage in your home. Washing machines use 15-30 gallons of water per load (older units are between 29 and 45 gallons), and dishwashers are anywhere between 3 and 7 gallons per cycle. That is a lot of water running through and being stored in these appliances, which means that is a lot of damage that can occur in your Wickliffe home. Here are some tips our team at Pine Ridge Restoration recommends following to make sure your appliances are actually making your life easier and not causing more problems:
The hoses that run from the washing machine to the water supply are common locations of water leaks. Since there is both a hose for hot water and one for cold water, there are double the odds that the fittings and connections can become loosened or disconnected. Be sure that the hoses are attached correctly, there are no kinks in them, and that they are in good condition. To avoid hose kinks, allow at least 4 inches between your washing machine and the wall. Wear and tear will gradually threaten the lifespan of your hoses, so it is good practice to replace them every 3-5 years. Inspect them monthly for any bulging, fraying, cracking, or leaks. It is also important to keep up with regular maintenance to help reduce water damage and breakdowns. Soap residue and buildup can clog both the tub and the hoses, so be sure to wash your washing machine with either hot water, vinegar, and baking soda or store-bought washing machine cleaners. It is also important to use the correct detergent in the correct amounts for your specific machine and be sure not to overload the tub – as all of these can cause flooding and water damage. If you suspect your washing machine is leaking, put a drip pan underneath it. This will help you find leaks sooner and prevent that water from soaking into your floors.
Dishwashers have a gasket seal along the edge of the door that creates a water-tight seal. When that seal fails, water can leak out all over your floors. This is one of the most common causes of leaks from the dishwasher. Over time and with use, the seal can crack, dry out, and become brittle. Also, build-up and food bits can build up along the gasket and prevent the door from closing tight against the frame. If your gasket seal is compromised, do not use the machine until it has been replaced. It is also important to wipe down your dishwasher and clean out any dried food that has been left behind. This food can also clog the drain inside your dishwasher, blocking the flow of water and resulting in leaks. If the water inlet valve becomes blocked or clogged, your dishwasher tub will not be able to fill or empty correctly, and will result in leaking water. Just like with washing machines, you need to be sure you are using the correct detergent. Using the wrong dishwasher detergent can cause machine malfunctions and water leaks.
Following the above advice will not only help prevent water damage from occurring but will also help extend the life of your appliances. Give Pine Ridge Restoration a call if you experience a water damage disaster.
